San Juan Mountains, Colorado
This photo was taken in late September during the peak of fall colors in the San Juan Mountains. It has stormed the night before, so I made sure to be up before dawn to catch the clearing clouds off the mountains. As I was driving up CR 7 I was not sure if it had snowed high up or not because the mountains were still socked in by clouds. There is a small beaver pond in the valley floor that I love to shoot at to get a great reflection as long as the winds were on my side. On this particular morning, Mother Nature pulled the curtain back on one of the most spectacular scenes I have ever witnessed in my lifetime of living here in the San Juan's. There was perfectly still air in the valley floor as I set up just before sunrise next to this small beaver pond. As the light slowly encompassed my scene, I could tell that there would be no sunrise as the clouds were still too thick to let the direct sunlight in, but as I stood patiently for about 30 minutes, I saw the clouds slowly dissipate from the mountain base on up. This photo was taken at 7:02am, just as the morning glow was in full force. The leaves of the golden aspens that surround this entire valley intensified this glow, casting a golden hue across the scene.
This image was shot using 6 vertical images stitched together to create this golden reflection panorama.
