San Juan Mountains, Colorado
This is one of my favorite images taken during the El Niño year of 2015-16. Devin Overton rides the massive north face of one of Ridgway, Colorado’s most iconic peaks - Corbett or Chipeta (The Utes and specifically Chief Ouray named it Chipeta after his wife.) Corbett is part of the Sneffel’s Range on the north side of the San Juan Mountains and sits just above 13,000 ft. The photo was taken May 2nd and was one of the last large descents of the year. With access to this remote area still limited this time of year, we had a 5:00 am start time as the approach was about 5 hours. Devin Overton and Dustin Hinde were on the summit at 10:30 am. We expected to find 2-6” of fresh snow, but to our surprise we found around 15-20” of late season powder above 11,000 ft. The weather was still stormy in the morning, as I could not see Devin and Dustin as the clouds were socked in around the peak. We waited for 2 hours for the clouds to clear before taking this image, when we got a window of about 60 seconds. When the light hit the face I shouted over the radio that this may be our only chance - go, go, go, dropping in 3…2…1!
